Spoon fish wind chime - black and blue - glass beads - Oregon driftwood - CONVICTS AT PLAY

Spoon fish wind chime

Fishing is our passion, so of course the next best thing for us to create with our art work would be a fish wind chime.  This family of fish will gently "swim" in the breeze and create a lovely sound.  It is not at all what you would expect silverware pieces to sound like ... it has a unique sound that would never lead you to believe it was anything less than a true wind chime.

It measures approximately 20 inches long by 11 inches wide ( this includes the length of the top wire for hanging).  The wood piece is driftwood we collected in Newport, which is at the Oregon Coast.  We have only placed a clear coat on them for preservation, and have left it in its natural color.  The beads are a mix of hematite and glass...including some hand blown beads which we have purchased from a local vendor. The colors are black and blue, and the beads shine like sparkling water in the sunlight. The wire is stainless steel coated that has been crimped at the ends. We NEVER use fishing line or knots...those will break down in the sunlight. Just for fun we used fishing swivels to attach the fish to the line, and this actually gives them more freedom of movement to spin and swim as they see fit. The fish are antique and vintage silver plated spoons that have been hand cut by us.  These spoons are a mix of three different spoon sizes - the largest is a serving spoon.

What really makes this wind chime different are the stripes that we have added to the fish.  Hence the title "Convicts at play".  We have used a process that changes the tarnish of the spoons, adding the dark color.

Just as a tid bit of extra information.  We take a great deal of pride in re-purposing and upcycling, and this wind chime is a true example of utilizing a spoon to it's fullest.  Of course, whoever originally purchased the spoons would have intended their use to be on an an elegant dinner table and over time they were probably stored in a cabinet to treasure as family heirlooms.  Oh, to just think of the history! We in turn purchased them at an Estate Sale for the next step in their journey, which would be to continue their legacy as works of art.  The handles were used to make into bracelets, and now the spoon heads were used as a part of this wind chime! We do strive to purchase as many of our supplies as possible from our local vendors, and so as we see it...we have brought these pieces full circle and in turn have supported our local small business economy!

 .......... MATERIALS ..........

• 5 antique and vintage silver plated spoon heads
• Hematite, glass and hand blown glass beads
• Oregon driftwood that has been clear coated for color and preservation
• Stainless steel coated wire and crimps

• Fishing swivels

.......... DURABILITY ..........

We test each and every one of our wind chimes our own yard, and although nothing is meant to withstand a Texas tornado, they have been proven to withstand the breezes and wind that we have here in Central Oregon. As this piece is ceramic, it will require more gentle treatment and it would be best to not allow freezing water to sit inside as it may cause it to crack.

We use coated stainless steel wire and crimps to attach each piece which accounts for its strength and durability - where others simply use fishing line and knots that easily break down from the UV rays of the sun. We only use glass, crystal, or natural stone beads ...never any plastic ... and we do support our local vendors for the majority of our bead purchases.
